Frisco ISD golfers finished with a flourish Tuesday at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) girls state tournament, and the effort showed when the two-day tournament was complete. FISD’s contingent of state competitors returned home with three top-10 team finishes as well as an individual medal.

In the 4A competition on the Slick Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay, Lebanon Trail High School finished as the state runner-up. The Trail Blazers were in third place after the first day and charged into second place with a strong second round.

"Not bad for all freshmen and sophomores," Lebanon Trail coach Scott Carmichael said.

Not bad at all for the team from the school that opened in 2016 and currently has only freshmen and sophomores. Lebanon Trail won the Carrollton Ranchview Invitational and the Sanger Invitational this year and won the 4A Region II title by 53 strokes.

Lebanon Trail’s state competitors were Olivia Mitchell, Madison Phung, Natalie Russo, Zoe Law and Dominique Gomez. Phung finished second in the 4A individual competition at state with a two-round total of 150.

In the 5A competition at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown, Liberty High School finished seventh and Centennial High School finished eighth. Liberty’s team members at state were Raeleigh Davidson, Rakhi Shah, Sona Shah, Sarah Buss and Maya Jain.

"This year’s team accomplished great things, especially considering we lost several key players from the prior year’s team to graduation," Liberty coach Shannon Glidwell said. "We had an influx of some good young talent, and the combination of our returning players with our younger players came together as we reached the months of April and May."

Centennial’s state team included Gabbi Bentancourt, Madi Ozuna, Ashley Shaw, Lindsey Kim and Kaitlyn Kern. Bentancourt was the highest FISD finisher in 5A, taking 14th with a two-day total of 151.

"After finishing in last place at district last year and having only two returning varsity players, we weren’t sure what to expect this season," Centennial coach Brooke Donovan said. "Instead of setting any outcome goals, we focused on process goals all year and as a result, ended our season at the state golf tournament for the first time. This team will be remembered as the five who paved the way and set a standard for our girls golf program."

Last week, the Centennial boys golf team finished second at the 5A state tournament.
